Short and Sweet Follow-Up Email After Interview

Brief templates that make an impression

Not every follow-up email needs to be lengthy. Sometimes a brief, genuine message is more impactful. These short and sweet samples prove that concise follow-ups work just as well — if not better — than longer ones.

When Short Follow-Ups Work Best

A short interview follow-up is ideal when the interview was brief, when you already sent a detailed thank you email and this is a status check, or when the company culture favors direct communication.

Short Follow-Up Samples

Sample 3: Warm and Casual

Subject: Still excited about [Position] Hey [Name], Hope you are having a great week. Wanted to touch base on the [Position] role — still very enthusiastic about the opportunity. Any updates? Cheers, [Your Name]

Sample 4: Adding a Quick Update

Subject: Quick update + following up Hi [Name], Following up on our conversation. Quick update: I just [relevant accomplishment]. Made me even more excited about the [Position] role. Any news on next steps? Best, [Your Name]

The 3-Sentence Formula

Every effective short follow-up contains exactly three elements:

  1. Context: Reference the interview or previous conversation briefly
  2. Interest: Reaffirm your enthusiasm for the role
  3. Ask: Request an update on next steps or timeline

That is it. Three sentences, clear purpose, professional tone. This takes under a minute to write.

Short vs Detailed: When to Choose Each

  • Go short: Status checks, second follow-ups, casual company culture, phone screen follow-ups
  • Go detailed: First follow-up after a substantive interview, when addressing a concern, when adding significant new value. See our full interview follow-up guide.

Timing Your Short Follow-Up

  • First follow-up: One week after the interview
  • Second follow-up: Two weeks after the interview
  • After stated deadline: 1-2 business days after their expected timeline passes
